Mortal Kombat (2021)

MORTAL KOMBAT! Once again, it's time to celebrate the combos and fatalities of one of the bloodiest intergalactic tournaments of all time. For the uninitiated, Mortal Kombat is about a group fighters from Earthrealm (aka Earth) who compete against beings from other realms, and sometimes for the fate of the universe. Off the bat, I'm beside myself with joy; it didn't take itself too seriously but it was a bad film that's still fun to riff over, and riff over in the same sense as Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (sequel to the 1995 version of MK). And, I love how it kept the spirit of the games with the fatalities; however, the progression of the fights leading to those fatalities could've been just as bloody.

One of the weaker elements of the film was Cole and his family, and I think that they didn't need to be included; it would have been better if they had selected one of the MCs from the game similar to the original 1995 film that focused on Liu Kang. Another con of the movie was that it was more of the character selection menu when we as the audience were expecting a tournament. Now, it does seem as though a sequel is being planned, and it intends to introduce another popular MC of MK in the form of Johnny Cage. Only time will tell if this iteration of Mortal Kombat will prove successful or if its failing becomes its fatality.
